How to Connect Your Alexa to Wi-Fi

Connecting to WiFi

If you want to connect your Amazona to WiFi, there are various methods of doing so. Either directly connect it to an existing wireless network or use the app to scan and join one. Once connected, follow on-screen instructions until your Alexa is completely set up – this should take just minutes or less! Once complete, it will become part of its respective WiFi network.

Connecting to Bluetooth

Some users may prefer using an external Bluetooth device rather than their Alexa’s built-in speakers for listening purposes, which allows access to certain services like Apple Music not supported directly by Amazon Echo and can improve sound quality via high-end speakers. To do this, open up the Alexa app and navigate to its ‘Devices’ screen; tap on your desired device before selecting Bluetooth Devices > Pair a New Device from there.

Your target device must already be discoverable and connected to your phone or tablet for use with Alexa, at which point the Echo device will present you with a list of available devices to pair. Select one from this list, follow its on-screen instructions to complete pairing, and follow through until paired successfully. This method works for various types of devices from headphones to speakers and smart home hubs.

To disconnect, say out loud “Alexa, disconnect from [device name].” Alternatively, disable bluetooth connectivity from within the Settings page of Alexa App.

Connecting to Mobile Hotspot

Up until recently, connecting an Echo or Dot device to a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot required using another device as a tethering hub; due to restrictions in mobile hotspot software on phones that limit them from accessing temporary Wi-Fi networks simultaneously with acting as mobile hotspots.

Recently, Amazon Alexa app update removed this restriction so you can now connect Echo devices directly to mobile hotspots from within its app.

To do so, open the Alexa app and scroll to the bottom of the screen where you’ll see “Use this device as a Wi-Fi hotspot”. Tap this option, follow any prompts provided to set your device into setup/pairing mode if necessary and your Echo will now use mobile data rather than your mobile data plan to access the internet – an ideal feature to bring on holiday or traveling trips as it will help save on mobile data costs!

Troubleshooting: How to Do if Alexa won’t Connect to WiFi

If you are doing everything correctly and you are still unable to connect your Alexa to WiFi then there might be something wrong with the network or the Alexa. So, here are some of our expert troubleshooting tips to help you get rid of the situation:

  1. Restart Alexa to get rid of software bugs: Plug out your Alexa device from the power, wait about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. It will restart Alexa and address most of the simple connectivity problems you might be facing.
  2. Check the WiFi network to ensure its functionality: See to it that your WiFi is on and operating properly by connecting another device to the same network. If other devices are not connected, then check your network rather than Alexa.
